Abstract
The United Nations has proclaimed October 1, 1998, through December 31, 1999, as the International Year of Older Persons (IYOP). Federal agencies are working together to sponsor IYOP activities in the United States. To commemorate the goals of IYOP, CDC has published these surveillance summaries to describe important health issues and to highlight the role of public health surveillance for older adults aged > or =65 years in the United States. Although older adults are the focus of these surveillance summaries, persons aged 55-64 years have also been included, when data were available, as a comparison group. Keywords
