The Structure of the "Pearl" Eye of Latheticus oryzae

Abstract
Histological investigation has shown that the structure is perfectly normal except for the absence of pigment in the ommatidia and interommatidial cells. Earlier reports of Sokoloff to the contrary were based on total preparations, which showed a pigmented ring on the periphery of the "pearl" eye. This is due to a chitinous ocular diaphragm, which contains integu-mental (melanin?) pigment, while eye pigments are chemically different (ommochromes and pteridines).
