Abstract
This work presents current results of an applied research aimed at defining a fixed-quality variable bit-rate coding algorithm suitable to run on workstations used for different visual communication applications in ATM networks. Subband coding has been chosen due to its suitability and effectiveness in coding both fixed and moving images in such an environment: both FIR and HR filter banks have been designed and tested considering various issues such as their space and frequency characteristics and computational complexity. Adaptive quantization based on statistical properties and subjective relevance of the different subbands has been realized with the use of a marginal analysis procedure. Finally, the feasibility of a Transputer based implementation of the algorithm in a reduced-complexity form is considered. Keywords
