Abstract
Adenoviruses are common human pathogens and have been shown to cause a wide spectrum of disease mainly in children and human immunodeficiency virus-infected individuals. Among the clinical manifestations of invasive adenovirus disease, pericarditis with effusion is a rare complication and the mechanisms by which adenovirus cause disease are poorly understood. In previous studies we have shown that cytokines and circulating immune complexes containing adenovirus hexon are involved in pathogenesis.1 Interleukin 6 (IL-6), IL-8 and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) serum concentrations are associated with the severity of adenoviral respiratory infection.2 Here we report the presence of adenovirus-specific immune complexes, IL-6 and alpha-interferon (IFN-alpha) in pericardial fluid from a child with fatal adenoviral pericarditis from which the recently described adenovirus 7h was isolated.
