CIRRHOSIS OF THE LIVER ASSOCIATED WITH ALCOHOLISM; REPORT OF ACUTE EXACERBATION WITH SERIAL LIVER BIOPSIES

Abstract
Serial liver biopsies were accomp- lished with the Roth-Turkel Needle in a patient during an episode of acute exacerberation of cirrhosis associated with alcoholism. Disappearance of the histopathologic findings of fatty infiltration, hepatocellular degeneration and diffuse neutrophilic infiltration parralleled the clinical improvement and return of most of the liver function studies toward normal. An exception was the result of the cephalin cholesterol flocculation test which showed an increase as the patient improved. Severe congestive heart failure, which was present on admission and cleared as the liver improved, was ascribed to the hepatic failure.
