Intraoperative Autotransfusion (IAT) in Spinal Surgery

Abstract
In a 2-yr prospective study of 99 surgical procedures consisting mostly of spinal deformity operations, red blood cells were recovered from the wound, washed and returned to the patient. There were no significant complications. The procedure is safe, practical and has reduced total intraoperative blood loss by 50% in 135 cases.
