Abstract
With the use of the Mie-Grüneisen equation, thermodynamic states off the principal Hugoniot are analyzed to obtain experimental results for the Grüneisen coefficient. Such states are achieved through the phenomena of regular and Mach reflection and through shock compression of porous samples whose initial densities are less than the standard density on which the principal Hugoniot is centered. Measurements of the speed of release waves in shocked material also permit the Grüneisen coefficient to be evaluated. The composite result for the dependence of the Grüneisen parameter on volume is compared with some functional forms commonly used in shock-wave work. Keywords
