Abstract
The previous work on a specific immunity reaction in trypanosome and spirochætal infections has been reviewed. This reaction is characterized by the adhesion to the parasite, when acted upon by the immune plasma in vitro, of blood platelets and other bodies. We have confirmed that the reaction is specific for the species of trypanosomes and spirochætes investigated. Contrary to the findings of previous workers we have shown that, both with trypanosomes and spirochætes, the specific antibody is present not only in the plasma but also in the serum. The specific antibody shows a high degree of thermostability. It is suggested that the reaction may be of service in the diagnosis of trypanosomiasis and in the discovery of game reservoirs in Africa and other countries. We propose to call this reaction “the adhesion phenomenon.”
