Abstract
We summarize some recent results, the details of which will be published elsewhere, and add some further discussion. Our results came mainly from a calculation of static thermal properties of the half‐filled band Hubbard model for a ring of N =4 atoms. They resolved serious discrepancies between some calculations which have appeared. For weak interactions, a new kind of smooth magnetic transition was found at low temperature. For strong interactions, properties are approximately independent of N when the grand canonical ensemble is used, enabling contact to be made with recent experimental work on (NMP)(TCNQ); the comparison suggests strongly that the Hubbard model is seriously deficient as a means of description of these experiments. We show here that the new magnetic transition and the related peculiar low‐T, small‐interaction behavior of the specific heat do not occur for chains, and that an explanation given in the literature for this result is incorrect, due to the fact that it is based on wrong conductivity calculations. Keywords
