ASSOCIATION OF LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS AND THYROTOXICOSIS IN BROTHER AND SISTER

Abstract
The following 2 cases are being reported because of the rarity of lupus erythematosus associated with thyrotoxicosis and because the patients are brother and sister. REPORT OF CASES Case 1.—H. L., an architect, was born in Chicago in 1903. During his childhood he had whooping cough, diphtheria and scarlet fever. Thyrotoxic symptoms were first noticed in March 1925, and in November of the same year a thyroidectomy was performed. It became necessary to perform a subtotal thyroidectomy in June 1926. His basal metabolic rate on Dec. 12, 1938 was —16 per cent and on Jan. 31, 1939 was —23 per cent. Because of this low metabolic rate he has been taking 4½ grains (0.3 Gm.) of thyroid daily. At present his basal metabolic rate varies from —10 to + 10 per cent. In June 1942, while he was on a vacation, the first symptoms of lupus erythematosus developed. Lesions appeared on
