Abstract
A cell with two identical pairs of electrodes oriented at 90° is examined. When both elements are submitted to the same dc voltage and to two ac voltages having the same amplitude but phase-shifted by 180°, the birefringence of the cell is proportional to the ac voltage as in a Pockels cell. Modulation experiments on the cell containing deionized nitrobenzene are presented and analogies and differences with Pockels cells are emphasized. Keywords
