Flow Velocity Variations in the Pulmonary Veins of the Dog

Abstract
Cineradiographic studies have been made of injected oily contrast droplets in the pulmonary veins in 12 dogs. Velocity curves were computed on the basis of displacement curves of the droplets and were related to the mechanism of the ventricular and atrial contractions. In all experiments a pulsatile flow was found in the pulmonary veins. A rapid antegrade flow coincided with the ejection phase of the right ventricle and a retrograde flow of lesser magnitude was present during left atrial contraction.
