Abstract
The average lateral distribution of muons (>300 MeV) in EAS (1017-1018 eV) has been derived from data collected at the Haverah Park detector array and is shown to be in excellent agreement with data from other arrays. The muon to water Cerenkov-density response ratio ( mu /C) has been used to derive a value for the elongation rate of 66(+or-10)g cm-2 decade-1. Fluctuations in the mu /C ratio between EAS were measured as approximately 20% for core distances -2. Correlations of fluctuations in several ground based parameters are established. Conclusions are drawn with regard to the primary mass composition. Keywords
