A survey of the carotenoid, vitamin C, and dry matter contents of many strains and vars. of 3 spp. of Lycopersicon was made. A control var., Baltimore, was analyzed at intervals throughout the season. 174 strains were analyzed for carotenoids and 240 for vitamin C. The content of [beta]-carotene varied most widely in a segregating population from the cross L. hirsutum X L. esculentum backcrossed to L. esculentum which was also studied. Lycopene and dry matter contents varied widely. The strain highest in [beta]-carotene contained 9 times as much as the highest commercial var.; that highest in vitamin C, 3 times.
