Depression and Chronic Pain: The Mediating Role of the Spouse

Abstract
Relationships among measures of pain intensity, depressed mood, marital satisfaction and spouse supportiveness were studied in a sample of 30 male, chronic pain patients and their wives. Over 1/2 of the patients and spouses reported significant depression and marital dissatisfaction. The lack of significant relationship between pain intensity and either depression or marital satisfaction, and the presence of significant correlations between depression and spouse-support measures was interpreted as support for a multidimensional, cognitive-behavioral model of depression among chronic pain patients.
