Abstract
The temperature dependence of the internal stretch vibrational mode of CO chemisorbed on Ni(111) has been studied with the use of infrared spectroscopy. The width of the absorption peak of the bridge-bonded molecules exhibits a strong temperature dependence. A theory is developed which accounts well for the experimental results. It shows that the peak broadening is caused by anharmonic coupling to one particular low-frequency mode, namely a hindered rotation. Keywords
