Abstract
Of 834 children who had appendectomies for appendicitis, 77 (9.2%) had developed an appendicitis mass when first seen. Under 6 yr of age 25% of appendicitis patients had an apppendix mass at presentation and almost 60% of the mass seen were in patients under 6 yr old. Of the 77 masses, 43 (55%) were palpable only under anesthesia. The masses were all initially managed conservatively by bed rest, i.v. fluids and i.v. antibiotics. All but 8 (10%) of the 77 patients responded to this form of treatment. Interval appendectomy was planned for a date 4 wk following discharge. The overall total average bed stay including interval appendectomy was 16 days. There were no late complications or relaparotomies.
