Housing Adjustments of the Disabled Elderly

Abstract
In this article, the effects of a serious disability on the housing and living arrangements of peopleover 60 years of age and their families are analyzed using data from a representative national sample ofadults. Roughly half of all respondents indicate that housing changes are considered as a result of disability.The most common choice is between moving in with relatives or moving to a nursing home,which is heavily dependent on whether there is a living spouse and on the sex of the disabled person.This research raises both the general question of whether there are needs for care that are not beingmet by existing options and the specific question of the dimensions of home care and institutional care.
