Abstract
This very well done epidemiological study largely confirms generally held notions about the prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and the risk factors associated. This article examines the epidemiology of HCV infection in the NHANES III database conducted between 1999-2002. It confirms a general prevalence of between 1-2% and strong risk factors being intravenous drug use, low family income and more than 20 lifetime sexual partners. The strengths of this study were the high quality of the analysis, and the size and recentness of the data set. Also, the authors of this study used a well characterized database, which validates our prior understanding. Keywords
