Abstract
Concerns have recently surfaced within the fishery profession over the uncontrolled growth of gray literature. Although it has a valid function and should not be eliminated, gray literature has been abused, in part, because the profession has not provided adequate direction. Consideration should be given to reducing the volume of gray literature by enhancing the review and distribution standards for some agency publications so that they more closely approximate journal standards. Materials appropriate for journal publication, however, should not be published in such series, and publishing in the formal literature should continue to be emphasized. The American Fisheries Society should assume the lead in determining whether appropriate policies and guidelines can be developed.
