THE RESERVOIR FUNCTION OF THE SPLEEN IN FOWLS

Abstract
Partial asphyxiation in 7 normal hens was accompanied by increase in the Hb content of the blood; after splenectomy no such rise in Hb resulted from asphyxiation. A control operation (exposure but not removal of the spleen) did not affect Hb content. As in mammalia the spleen in fowls presumably acts as a reservoir, expelling red cells into the general circulation in emergency.
