Abstract
Comparison of the proton groups emitted under deuteron bombardment by a target of ordinary carbon and by one enriched 25 times in shows the existence of an excited state of at 5.24±0.29 Mev. This state serves as a possible source for the known 5.5-Mev -rays. There is no evidence of any lower-lying excited level in the nucleus.
