Abstract
The arboreal ant, Azteca alfari, normally restricts its activity to the crown of trees of the genus Cecropia. However, if the trunk of the tree is forked near the ground, ants may descend in large numbers to the fork where they cross from one side of the tree to the other. In these movements onto the lower trunk two different daily patterns have been recorded, one of strictly diurnal activity and the other with major activity occurring just after sunset.
