Abstract
The US clearly is a Pacific power. Indeed, it is the Pacific power. It has been a Pacific power for most of its history, certainly since 1853 when Commodore Matthew Perry and his ‘black ships’ opened the door to Tokagawa Japan. It has been the Pacific power since that magic moment in 1945 when General Douglas MacArthur stood on the quarterdeck of the battleship Missouri and received the surrender of Imperial Japan. Keywords
