HEART DISEASE OF UNKNOWN CAUSE IN SIBLINGS

Abstract
The occurrence of heart disease of unknown etiology in 10 pairs of siblings is reported. Post mortem examination was performed in 7 cases. The pathological findings varied, showing endocardial fibroelastosis, myocardial hypertrophy and myocardial fibrosis. Progressive congestive heart failure, often right-sided and mimicking constrictive pericarditis, peripheral emboli and a large heart often without significant murmurs were found clinically. The presence of heart disease of this type in siblings suggests that the primary defect may be congenital.
