Abstract
Using the concept of artificial dielectrics, a multi-layered single-mode fiber is designed which possesses an enhanced polarization preserving characteristic. An analysis of the multi-layered slab waveguide problem is first carried out. Numerical results show that this concept is feasible. Then, a finite-element analysis is used to demonstrate the enchanced polarization preserving property of a layered optical fiber. Keywords
