New Models for Radon Progeny Near the Earth's Surface

Abstract
Models for outdoor radon progeny near the Earth's surface provide improved predictions of progeny disequilibrium if two effective particle size groups are used and particle diffusion through a thin laminar sub-layer just above the Earth's surface is included. Calculations with a new computer code, RPOUT, are compared with new data. An unanticipated finding is a prediction of situations where the activity concentration of a progeny can exceed that of its parent nuclide. This finding provides theoretical support for previously reported controversial observations.
