Abstract
A culture of an actinomycete was isolated from a Bikini soil and found to produce an antibiotic which was characterized by an antibacterial spectrum similar to that of streptomycin. The antibiotic substance was isolated from the culture medium, concentrated and tested for its antibacterial properties and its effect upon various infections in exptl. animals. The isolated substance was found to be identical with similar streptomycin prepns. obtained from Streptomyces griseus. The new culture was, however, distinctly different in nature from S. griseus and other known actinomycete cultures. It was, therefore, described as a new species under the name of S. bikiniensis. Keywords
