Counseling the Parents of Young Homosexual Male Patients

Abstract
This paper describes the authorÆs practice of interviewing the parents of young homosexual men in therapy; specifically, parents who are in crisis after having recently learned their son is homosexual. A review of the literature on the ôoldö and ônewö schools of thought in this area is presented, as well as an analysis of motivations for disclosure to parents. The importance of thorough patients assessment and preparation is emphasized. Therapist roles and functions is assisting parents are described and discussed in detail.
