Abstract
A sorting device based on mechanical agitation of a substrate sample in a water column, followed by elutriation, provides a rapid and convenient method of separating benthic faunal components and finer sediment fractions. The operation is efficient in terms of total time of analysis and the percentage of animals removed. The method is versatile and can be modifed to meet the needs of specific sampling programs.
