Clinical Supervision and the Foreign Language Teacher

Abstract
The use of clinical supervision in the foreign language classroom may be a way to make the supervising teacher's comments more meaningful and helpful to the student teacher. A contract is made between the student teacher and the supervisor; the latter uses a prearranged format to analyze the student's performance and to give written feedback to be used in later discussion. Only one teaching skill is to be analyzed at a time. After that skill has been taught, both the supervisor and the student teacher evaluate the performance, and they discuss ways to improve the presentation and to make changes as needed. This article lists the teaching skills which may be considered in constructing a contract, it presents a sample contract sheet, and it gives an example of an actual situation.
