Abstract
Institutions that have been longtime rivals are merging. In Massachusetts, Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Massachusetts General Hospital have merged, and two of the state's largest health maintenance organizations (HMOs) — Harvard Community Health Plan and Pilgrim Health Care — have merged. In Philadelphia, Hahnemann Medical School and the Medical College of Pennsylvania have merged. Glaxo merged with Burroughs Wellcome, and Upjohn merged with Pharmacia. Many health care organizations are also expanding their range of services by acquiring other organizations. Hospitals across the country are acquiring groups of primary care physicians, outpatient clinics, rehabilitation units, nursing homes, and home . . .Keywords
