Abstract
Using neutron diffraction, the first direct experimental evidence is given that 4He does not solidify continuously on the surface of MgO. This result is confirmed by isopycnals measured in the vicinity of the bulk melting curve. Thus the importance of substrate symmetry for continuous nucleation is illustrated. Keywords
