Response of Growing-Finishing Male and Female Swine to Floor Space Allowance on Partially and Totally Slotted Floors

Abstract
One hundred and forty-four growing-finishing pigs were used in two trials to evaluate response of barrows and gilts to different floor space allowances in a partially slotted floor building and in a totally slotted floor building. Floor space allowances per pig for the weight periods 52 to 110 lb. (24 to 50 kg) 110 to 150 lb. (50 to 68 kg), and 150 to 220 lb. (68 to 100 kg), were (1) 3, 4 and 5 sq. ft. (0.27, 0.36 and 0.45 m2), (2) 4, 6 and 8 sq. ft. (0.36, 0.54 and 0.72 m2) and (3) 6, 8 and 10 sq. ft. (0.54, 0.72 and 0.90 m2). Voluntary feed intake and rate of gain were lower in sequence (1) than in (2) and (3). The latter two did not differ significantly. Gain/feed values were not significantly affected by space. Barrows consumed more feed and gained significantly faster than gilts. In trial 2 gilts had significantly higher gain/feed than barrows. There were no significant space × sex interactions.
