Abstract
Using a mathematical expression, derived on the basis of probability considerations, the curves obtained by plotting dilution of various lysins against time required for complete hemolysis of a certain number of cells are described. Experimental and calculated results are found to be in good agreement. The radii of of the zones of action[long dash]the hypothetical region about the cell, within which the hemolytic reaction proceeds[long dash]are calculated from the time-dilution curves by a formula which is derived here. These radii for different animals, arranged in increasing order, fall into Ryvosh''s series. As suggested by theoretical considerations, the volume of the zone of action is proportional to the cell''s resistance to the lysin. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
