Abstract
It is known that the sperm of Sciara regularly receives, and supposedly transmits, more than the haploid number of chromosomes. In maturation divisions of whole eggs it is shown that the regulatory process to restore chromosome balance does not occur before or at fertilization. More than the true 2n number are seen in early cleavage nuclei; presumably the necessary elimination occurs during cleavage in conjunction with the elimination which occurs during differentiation of soma from germ-line. The oocyte divisions appeared to conform essentially to the classical scheme. Typically only one sperm enters the egg, and fertilization follows the regular scheme. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
