Abstract
In Japan, the occurrence of Protogonyaulax catenella red tide, along with paralytic shellfish poison (PSP)-infestation of bivalves, was for the first time confirmed in 1975, at Owase Bay, Mie Prefecture. Since the, extensive studies have been carried out on various aspects of PSP such as: search for and identification of responsible plankton species, surveillance for PSP-infested areas and bivalves, isolation and characterization of PSP components, development of chemical assay methods, ichythyotoxicity of PSPs, and search for other PSP-bearing organisms. An attempt is made to overview the PSP studies in Japan, focusing on recent findings. Keywords
