Über das Prodigiosin, den roten Farbstoff des Bacillus prodigiosus, III.

Abstract
Prodigiosin, when reduced catalytically with H, adds 14 atoms of H, and changes through violet to yellow, and finally becomes colorless. Oxidation does not restore the pigment. Oxidation of the reduced product with acid permanganate yields, among other things, succinic acid, showing the presence of a 3rd pyrrol ring in the pigment. A possible porphyrin-like formula is suggested, in which ring III may be attached to the methylene C between rings I and II, to give a tri-pyrrol methane derivative.
