Effects of Triamcinolone Injection

Abstract
To the Editor. —I read with interest the article by Giangiacomo and colleagues' in the June 1986 issue of the Archives. I have been following their work since their initial presentation at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology meeting in 1985. I, too, have conducted some basic histologic work on rabbits as well as clinical trials with triamcinolone acetonide injections. Unfortunately, neither my histologic nor my clinical findings support the enthusiastic success reported in their article. Dr Giangiacomo and colleagues stated that injected triamcinolone produced "local lytic effects on fibroblasts and collagen that were documented histologically," localized to the immediate site of the injected drug in a specimen harvested two weeks after subconjunctival injection in rabbits.
