Abstract
A battery-powered sound-source (the “pinger”), which emits precisely-timed pulses, can be attached to underwater apparatus. Comparison of pulses received directly from the pinger with their bottom reflections gives the height of the gear above bottom. The application described here is the first in which the gear is towed well astern of the ship. Keywords
