Abstract
THE December 1964 Archives contained a monograph recognized as one of the great landmarks in the development of scientific otolaryngology, on "Transtemporal Bone Microsurgical Removal of Acoustic Neuromas" edited by Dr. William F. House. The Archives is pleased to present in this issue, four years later, the sequel to the 1964 monograph, a study of the first 200 patients with unilateral acoustic neuromas operated with the aid of the operating microscope, and utilizing some form of a transtemporal bone approach. In additional papers, bilateral acoustic neuromas and other tumors of the cerebellopontine angle are considered. Of particular interest to otologic microsurgeons who have followed the methods pioneered by House, are the papers on surgical complications and fatalities. Of interest to all otolaryngologists, and indeed to all physicians, is the paper on the "History of the Diagnosis and Treatment of Acoustic Neuromas."
