Abstract
Complex formation between 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene and aliphatic amines in dimethyl sulphoxide has been examined by n.m.r. spectroscopy, electrical conductance measurements, and visible/ultraviolet spectroscopy. Evidence for interaction could be obtained only with primary and secondary amines and ammonia and not with tertiary amines. The results indicate an equilibrium between two amine and one trinitrobenzene molecule to produce two ions, viz., an anion formed by attachment of an amide ion to a ring carbon atom and a substituted ammonium ion. Keywords
