Abstract
Several cases illustrating effects of mechanical distortion following fixation in Sciara ocellaris are described and figured. Different degrees of stretching indicate how an apparently alveolar or honeycomb-type of structure may be distorted into a series of longitudinal striations or "threads." Lateral adhesion of different regions, followed by forcible separation, shows that thread-like lateral strands may be pulled out sidewise from the chromosomes, and that such strands may connect with and be indistinguishable in appearance from the longitudinal strands within the chromosome. Evidence supports earlier results indicating that longitudinal striationa are not individual chromonemata. This publication has 5 references indexed in Scilit:
