PERIPHERAL VASCULAR ACTION OF ESTROGEN IN THE HUMAN MALE 1

Abstract
Estrogenic hormone was injected intramusc. into 20 human [male][male]. Changes in finger-vol. were measured by a sensitive plethysmograph. An increase in finger-vol. commenced within 3-5 mins. and continued for a 1/2 hr. or more (12 subjects). No change in skin temp. was observed. Inj. of corn oil alone was without effect on finger-vol. in these subjects. 6 subjects failed to respond to inj. of the hormone, while 2 others responded to inj. of the corn oil vehicle. Inasmuch as a change occurred in about 2/3 of the men studied, it appears that in the human [male], the inj. of estrogen may cause vasodilation of the smallest vessels of the skin, since no change in temp. (i.e., change in the local rate of blood flow) was observed.
