Abstract
Non-nucleate apical and basal pieces differ in the manner of membrane formation rather than in the ability or non-ability to form membranes. The non-growing basal pieces form walls primarily by apposition, the apical pieces by intussception. The general incapacity of non-growing parts to form walls by intussception with apical growth can not be attributed to a gen- eral structural difference in apical and basal parts of a cell but must depend upon the absence of a specific factor.
