Prolongation of the Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time Associated with Poor Venipuncture Technic

Abstract
Blood samples drawn by medical students and medical technology students inexperienced in blood drawing frequently yield falsely prolonged activated partial thromboplastin times (APTT’s). Prothrombin times and thrombin times are not affected. The falsely prolonged APTT’s can be avoided by drawing blood by a “two-tube” technic. Comparisons of coagulation factors in plasma samples yielding prolonged and normal APTT’s in blood from the same subjects did not reveal the reasons for the falsely prolonged APTT’s.
