CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE AND HYPONATREMIA: UNTOWARD EFFECTS OF MERCURIAL DIURESIS

Abstract
The production of rapid diuresis in patients with congestive heart failure by the use of organic mercurials and restriction of dietary NaCl may be complicated by development of hyponatremia, hypochloremia, and rise in blood NPN. Clinical data of 12 such patients are summarized. Treatment with hypertonic (5%) NaCl soln. intraven. or NaCl orally is effective in restoring blood electrolytes to normal and alleviating symptoms of salt depletion.
