Abstract
Some low-temperature thermodynamic and magnetic properties of ytterbium iron garnet have been calculated as functions of temperature and orientation of the magnetization. The calculation is based on the spectroscopically determined splittings of the ground-state doublets of the ytterbium ions. The calculation accounts for the principal features of the observed torques and specific heats. It predicts a compensation point in the magnetization near 7.7°K which has since been observed. It also predicts a temperature change accompanying an adiabatic rotation in a saturating magnetic field. Keywords
