Abstract
The present study attempts to clarify some of the effects of the energy-onset vs. energy-termination operation in avoidance conditioning by (a) introducing a control for the S's "operant level" or frequency of intertrial responding and (b) running additional conditions designed to control for spurious responding, such as sensitization or pseudoconditioning, which may occur and be mistaken for genuine avoidance responding. In addition, two sources of stimulus energy are used: a buzzer, which shows large differences between onset and termination, and a 4,000-cycle pure tone, which does not show such differences.
