Effect of Schistosoma Mansoni Infection on Hepatic Drug-Metabolizing Capacity of Athymic Nude Mice *

Abstract
The effects of infection with Schistosoma mansoni on the activities of several hepatic drug-metabolizing enzymes were investigated in congenitally athymic homozygotic nude mice and in a heterozygotic strain of BALB/c derived mice. In athymic nude mice, infection with schistosomes of the same duration and intensity (in terms of the number of eggs in the liver) as in heterozygotic mice resulted in a much smaller reduction in hepatic drug-metabolizing enzyme activities. Therefore, the severe reductions of the hepatic drug-metabolizing function in this infection occur only in mice that are immunologically competent and, thus, are dependent on the host's response to the parasite eggs.This publication has 16 references indexed in Scilit:
